Why Upgrade?
Starter chain failure is a common weak point in these motors. The stock chains tend to stretch over time. Once they elongate, slack develops in the system, leading to uneven loading and accelerated wear—eventually resulting in a broken chain.
Common contributors:
- High cylinder pressure during cranking
- Opening the throttle while starting, which adds extra load
- Auto-decompression re-engaging as RPM drops on shutdown
- Factory chain material that isn’t built for long-term abuse
Recommended Upgrade
For best results, pair this chain with our upgraded heavy-duty decompression spring. A stronger decompression spring helps control decompression engagement and reduces unnecessary stress on the starter system during startup and shutdown, extending the life of the chain and starter components.
If you’re already inside the engine, upgrade both and fix it right the first time.
Due to the high loads placed on the starter system, starter chains are not covered under warranty once installed or used.
If your engine is repeatedly stretching, damaging, or breaking starter chains, there may be another issue within the starting or decompression system causing excessive load. A reinforced chain may help, but it will not correct an underlying mechanical problem.
We strongly recommend diagnosing the cause of repeated chain failures before installing another replacement.
